Face detection is a review aid, not a verdict

A box around a face can help someone review footage. It cannot explain who a person is, why they were there or whether they did anything wrong. Keep detection, comparison and human decisions separate. This matters technically and it matters for the people whose images may appear in the system.

Illustrated guide: Face detection is a review aid, not a verdict

Separate the tasks

Detection looks for a face-like region in an image. Identity-related workflows may compare features or associate a name with a sample, which introduces different risks. The ICO’s biometric guidance describes recognition in terms of identifying people using their characteristics. Legal treatment depends on the actual processing and context, so do not assume a feature label settles the issue. Seek appropriate advice before deploying identity-related monitoring in a workplace or public setting.

Know what CamBackup samples

Automatic face analysis is an explicit opt-in and works on bounded samples from owned confirmed recorded segments. It is not continuous identification of every person in every frame. Missed samples, weak angles, lighting and a recording gap can all affect what is available. Review the underlying footage and timestamps rather than counting detected faces as a complete attendance or occupancy record. A lack of detections does not prove nobody passed through.

Keep naming and comparison cautious

If you manually name a face sample or use an available comparison workflow, document what the label means and who reviewed it. Similar appearance is not proof of identity. Avoid using an uncertain result as the sole basis for denying entry, accusing someone or taking another significant action. Use the full context and an appropriate human review process. Preserve uncertainty in notes instead of allowing a convenient label to become an unsupported fact.

Minimise the data you keep

Decide whether face samples are needed for your purpose at all. Limit access, review retention and use the opt-out control when the feature is no longer justified. Check the effect of privacy masks before enabling new analysis; old samples are a separate data-management responsibility. Exporting or sharing footage can expose faces even when no analysis is enabled. Explain the actual monitoring to affected people under the requirements that apply to your location and use.
